Ultraviolet Light Can Purify Your Air

Though it might not seem that ultraviolet lights have much to do with air quality, think again. Some recent scientific studies have shown that when a UV light is added to an air vent, it can increase the health benefits of the air that comes out of that vent.

Ultraviolet light can destroy microorganisms in the air when the pollutants come in contact with the light. The UV light destroys more germs than other methods of air purification, and is quick, odorless and effective. UV light has four wavelengths that lend themselves to specific air purification: Photochemical UV-A, Erythemal UV-B, Germicidal UV-C, and extreme shortwave UV Energy, which generates ozone.

How UV helps your air quality

All four of the UV spectrums noted above do much to improve air quality. The Center for Disease Control recommends the use of UV-C to reduce germs; its rays are very powerful. The rays are usually produced by a low level mercury lamp.

The UV-C rays work quickly to purify the air: the UV-C rays hit the polluted air and break through them. Then, the radiation goes into the DNA of the microorganisms and modifies them, eventually destroying the molecules. These types of air filtration systems are often used in health care facilities and other sterile environments.

Germs, bacteria, spores and mold travel through the air everywhere, not just in hospital environments. If you are seriously concerned about the air quality in your home, this is the system to look into. It's fast, easy and clean.
